Title - “Quest Programme”
Quest's purpose is to enrich the learning experience of underserved children through the professional development of teachers and educators.
The program is undertaken with the following objectives:
- To provide 1:1 Mentor-mentee relationship that focuses on career guidance and general support.
- To assess students annually to identify any needs for more challenging content or instruction.
- To connect and build a larger community by having personalized interactions with the student’s family and friends living in their communities.
- As a mentor, to connect with mentee during vacation to provide knowledge and guidance about navigating college and life by sharing personal experience and examples.
- For parents to understand the concept of privileges provided, and give recommendations on how to work with their wards in building their confidence and growth.
- To increase the number of admissions.
- To know about the student in complete, her interests and hidden talents.
The Context:
Residential Degree Colleges have been established to provide free education to the students with low family income and to ultimately increase the literacy rate in Telangana state. This programme bestows an opportunity to understand the student in a much better way and bring out the best from her. The Quest Programme has the overarching goal of making students more comfortable, friendly, and more welcoming to college space and environment.
Practice:
‘Quest’ lexically, is a long search for something that is difficult to find. So this programme was initiated with an intention to understand the background of the students' lifestyle and find out something about the student which is not so easily possible to find in the college.
Every year during vacation, when the students are sent home, each faculty is made to visit the students’ houses for this very purpose. Faculty visits the student’s house on the day convenient to her with prior intimation given to the student and her family members. This has been practiced every year since the inception of the college in 2017 and has been giving considerable results. During covid period, when the schools were closed because of the pandemic, Village Learning Centres were started in their villages and our students were made to teach the children in their villages.
Evidence of success:
- This programme has given vide publicity of our institutions in the remote areas and thus increased our admissions.
- Even the families with no literacy background are now ready to give their children education through these institutions.
- Female foeticide in the remote areas got reduced as most of them no longer consider them as a burden.
- Early marriages have been reduced as the girls’ parents were educated about the possible outcomes of getting their ward educated and making advancement in her career.
Problem Encountered and Resources required:
- Lack of Accessibility: Many tribal hamlets are located in remote areas, making it difficult for the teacher to reach.
- Reluctance to Change: Tribals often resist changes that threaten their cultural practices, lifestyle, and balancing traditional identity with modern aspirations can create an identity crisis.
- Resources required: Empowering tribal communities through education, skill development, and awareness. tribal development challenges require a holistic approach that respects their cultural heritage while providing opportunities for growth and progress. The government, NGOs, and society must collaborate to create an inclusive and sustainable future for tribal communities.
