Research, Innovations, and Extension is a key component of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) framework used to evaluate higher education institutions in India. This criterion focuses on assessing the institution's performance in the areas of research, innovation, and extension activities. Here’s a brief overview:
Research
Quality and Quantity: Institutions are evaluated based on the volume and quality of research activities. This includes the number of research projects undertaken, publications in peer-reviewed journals, patents filed, and research output.
Funding and Grants: The extent of financial support received from various funding agencies (both governmental and non-governmental) for research projects is considered. This reflects the institution’s ability to attract research funding.
Research Facilities: Evaluation includes the availability and adequacy of research facilities, infrastructure, and resources provided to researchers and students.
Innovations
Innovative Practices: This aspect assesses the institution’s role in fostering innovation through unique teaching methodologies, technological advancements, and creative approaches in research and academics. Technology Transfer: The extent to which the institution engages in transferring technology and innovations to industry and society is examined. This includes collaborations with industries and commercializing research outcomes.
Incubation and Start-ups: Institutions are assessed on their support for entrepreneurial activities, such as business incubators, start-ups, and fostering a culture of innovation among students and faculty.
Extension
Community Engagement: Institutions are evaluated based on their involvement in community service and outreach programs. This includes initiatives such as health camps, educational programs, environmental campaigns, and social welfare activities.
Extension Programs: The impact and reach of extension programs conducted by the institution through various channels (e.g., NSS, NCC, partnerships with NGOs) are considered. This also includes participation in government-led programs like Swachh Bharat.
Student and Faculty Participation: The level of involvement of students and faculty in extension activities and how these activities contribute to societal development and address community needs are assessed.
In summary, this criterion emphasizes an institution’s commitment to advancing research, encouraging innovation, and contributing to society through meaningful extension activities. It reflects the institution’s overall engagement in generating new knowledge, applying innovative solutions, and actively participating in community development.
